“In South Africa, many families are not made up of a typical nuclear family structure. According to the General Household Survey 2019, 33% of children below the age of 17 live with both parents. 42 % live with the mother while 21% do not live with their parents. This means that many children are raised by their grandparents and other relatives, especially in rural areas due to reasons such as labour migration.”
