It has been a busy and diverse month for BRIDGE’s Early Childhood Development Community of Practice (ECD CoP) as members deepen discussions in relation to the ECD Policy, work with the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA) on the implementation of the ‘Occupational Certificate: ECD Practitioner, National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 4’ and launch the BRIDGE Map of ECD Resource and Training Organisations (RTOs). Members of the CoP spent a large proportion of the last meeting, held on August 2nd, engaging in meaningful discussions to identify opportunities and gaps in the ECD Policy and to ‘inspire, collaborate and innovate’ to change the landscape in South Africa. The discussions revolved around a Policy Think Piece, as produced by Sherri Le Mottee.
The ECD CoP has committed to engage with the Policy as a collective and work with government in the implementation of the Policy. To support these discussions and to assist the sector more widely, BRIDGE has produced two Policy pieces including an Overview of the ECD Policy, and an ECD Policy Think Piece.
Another collaborative endeavour by the CoP has been the establishment of a task team of representatives of the National ECD Alliance (NECDA) and the ECD CoP, to support the ETDP SETA and Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) in the implementation of the ‘Occupational Certificate: ECD Practitioner, NQF Level 4’. The Task Team met with the ETDP SETA as a result of the ETDP SETA’s request to consult the sector in relation to some of the issues pertaining to materials development, accreditation, registration of workplaces, assessment, cost implications, etc. The task team will meet with the ETDP SETA again in September to discuss the issues in more detail. Here is a presentation given by Maswazi Tshabalala at an ECD CoP meeting. If you would like to raise any issues linked to the qualification implementation, please click here.
In order to present a data-driven foundation for increased alignment, co-ordination of efforts, reduction of duplication and closing of gaps in the ECD training sector, BRIDGE has produced a Map of ECD Resource and Training Organisations (RTOs). The map currently provides information on the distribution, size, scope and capacity of RTOs in Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. The intention is to map RTOs in all nine provinces. View the RTO map here.
