Mentoring Novice Teachers ‒ A Critical Discussion

What is the role of mentoring in the teaching profession? This was the key topic of discussion at the Teachers Upfront Seminar held on the 20th April 2016 at the Wits School of Education. The session involved critical dialogue around the mentoring and support of teachers who are new to the profession.

The meeting aimed to open up discussion around the disjuncture between the expectations of schools receiving new teachers and the expectations and needs of beginner teachers. A key point of deliberation was what should or could be expected of novice teachers. Further concerns included the efficacy of existing mentoring programmes in schools and the difference between induction processes and mentoring.
