South Africa has seen a rise in school violence since the beginning of 2019. Instead of being safe places of nurturing, learning and human development, many SA schools reflect the traumatic experience of their surrounding communities.
These meeting highlights include discussion we had after Judy Strickland presentation. She is the founder of the Hope House Counselling Centre in Cape Town is working towards trauma-informed schools in South Africa, which deals with the impacts of trauma on behaviour, as well as learning. The concept of trauma-informed schools’ intervention is a new concept that Strickland believes, should play a part in counter-acting school violence. Trauma-informed schools programme have benefited children and teachers alike. She presented on her work in these schools which was extremely helpful.
